Politics of Banning Slaughter
|
MAY 2011
Congress amended Agricultural Appropriations Act of 2012, continuing to ban funding for USDA export inspections at slaughter plants.
JUNE 2011
Senators Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and
Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) introduced SB 1176, the American Horse
Slaughter Prevention Act of 2011. S. 1176 would amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping,
transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing,
selling, or donation of horses and other equines to be slaughtered for
human consumption.

JUNE 22, 2011, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released the report on horse slaughter and its impact on finance. The GAO provides fact based information in a non-partisan manner, in order to provide congress with information before votes on bills. In this report the GAO shows that, even though slaughter stopped here in the US in 2007, slaughter has increased 148% from 2006-2010 in Canadian plants. It has increase 660% during the same period in Mexico. Clearly showing that slaughter is a booming business outside our borders, with American horses lives at stake.
